Правительственное ведомство, образованное в марте 1913. Ведает вопросами улучшения условий труда, занятости, защиты интересов трудящегося населения страны, трудового законодательства (внесло более 130 законопроектов), выдачи пособий по безработице, предотвращения дискриминации при найме и т.п. В 1991 министерство имело около 18 тыс. служащих. В состав министерства входят Администрация по вопросам занятости и профессиональной подготовки [Employment and Training Administration], Администрация по регулированию трудовых отношений [Labor-Management Services Administration], Администрация по стандартам занятости [Employment Standards Administration], Бюро трудовой статистики [Bureau of Labor Statistics], Администрация по технике безопасности и здоровью работников [Occupational Safety and Health Administration]. Возглавляется министром труда [Secretary of Labor], назначаемым Президентом США "по совету и с согласия" [advice and consent] Сената [Senate, U.S.] и являющимся членом кабинета министров [cabinet]
